- Coal Based Power Plants
The business provides the entire range of supercritical power equipment and services for BTG on EPC basis. Our integrated manufacturing facility at Hazira in Gujarat (India) with global partners has a manufacturing capacity of 5000 MW per annum.
Turnkey Solutions
Close to 80 per cent of all the mining in India is for coal, by far the most abundantly available fossil fuel in the country. About 75 per cent of all that coal is consumed by the power industry to drive more than 50 per cent of the country's total installed capacity.
We offer turnkey solutions for BTG of large coal-based power plant projects (up to 800 MW) based on ultra-supercritical/supercritical standards.

Ultra-Supercritical / Supercritical Turbine Generators
L&T-MHI Power Turbine Generators Private Limited is our joint venture with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Japan, and Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, Japan. At its state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Hazira, Gujarat, the company executes supercritical and ultra-supercritical steam turbine generator (STG) equipment ranging from 500 MW to 1000 MW and has manufacturing capacity of 5000 MW/annum.
Ultra-Supercritical / Supercritical Boilers
L&T-MHI Power Boilers Private Limited, our joint venture with the world’s leading power equipment maker Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Japan, executes ultra-supercritical/supercritical boilers of up to 1000 MW on turnkey basis, forging its own considerable engineering and project management prowess with the technological muscle of the Japanese giant.

Construction Services
L&T offers the benefits of eight decades of experience in construction. Our construction record spans approximately 60,000 MW of power capacity. Our customers gain from a proven ability to mobilise large workforces, advanced construction techniques, and a thorough understanding of requirements at project sites.
Our Construction and Erection capabilities include:
- Survey and soil investigation
- Site development works – levelling and grading, compound wall and fencing, roads and drains, railway sidings, ash ponds, green belt and landscaping
- Complete civil and structural works for power plant including piling, equipment foundations, powerhouse building, plant and non-plant buildings, township and facilities
- Erection of SG, TG, GTG, HRSG and all other main equipment and Balance of Plant (BoP) equipment
- Piping and ducting - fabrication and erection, including all protective coating and refractory insulation
- Electrical and instrumentation works
- EHV switchyard and transmission lines

Power Block Auxiliaries
Coal Pulverisers
L&T-MHI Power Boilers Private Limited also provides large capacity coal pulverisers which use Mitsubishi Power’s advanced Mitsubishi Rotary Separator to achieve higher fineness directly resulting in improved combustion efficiency and lower emissions. Since these are large capacity pulverisers, they reduce the number of pulverisers that are required to be used with the boilers, effectively reducing maintenance costs for customers.
Critical Piping
L&T has a large pool of experienced piping engineers, specialised software, and state-of-the-art manufacturing set-up for carrying out critical piping work for power plants. Our capability includes alloy steel piping for high pressure and high temperature steam conditions, feed water systems and complete power cycle piping in boiler and turbine islands.
Foundry
L&T has set up a heavy foundry with a capacity of 2500T per annum. The foundry would be capable of producing castings of up to 60 MT, making L&T Energy-CarbonLite Solutions only the second company in India with such capability. The foundry will cater to the heavy casting needs of supercritical boilers, turbines, and related auxiliaries.
Heat Exchangers
L&T also supplies heat exchangers and vessels for power plants as a part of BTG projects. L&T has proven experience in design, manufacturing and delivery of high-pressure and low-pressure heat exchangers, condensers and de-aerators.
Variable Pitch Axial Fans
Variable pitch axial fans are used where high volumes, high aerodynamic performance and precise flow control are required, and where reliability and continuous running for extended periods are demanded. They are the fans of choice in critical applications for large boilers within the power industry, where they are used in both primary air, forced draught and induced draught applications.
L&T Howden provides for design, engineering, manufacture and supply of axial fans to thermal power plants ranging between 100 MW to 1200 MW.
Rotary Air Preheaters
Power boilers require highly efficient and reliable air preheaters to ensure optimum performance. The core of the preheater, the heat exchange surface, is composed of several hundred tonnes of metal plates known as elements. As the preheater slowly rotates, at around 1-2 rpm, the elements collect heat from the hot gas stream being discharged from the boiler and then transfer it to the cold air stream entering the boiler. This can provide improved efficiency and boiler performance, thus leading to reduced CO2 emissions from the boiler.
